Knife Gate Valve

As a Knife Gate Valve Manufacturer in Canada, Valves Only Canada supplies knife gate valves for industrial pipelines and process systems where reliable on/off isolation is required. The valves are selected according to the operating conditions and piping requirements of each application, including pressure, temperature, media characteristics, material compatibility and end connection.

What Is a Knife Gate Valve?

A knife gate valve is a linear-motion isolation valve that uses a thin, knife-edged gate to open and close the flow passage. The gate moves vertically through the valve body, allowing the valve to isolate pipelines carrying challenging media such as slurry, sludge, wastewater, fibres, suspended solids and abrasive materials.

When the valve is opened, the gate is lifted clear of the flow passage, allowing the media to pass through. When the valve is closed, the gate moves downward into the flow path and provides shut off. This operating principle makes knife gate valves particularly suitable for applications where the media may contain solids, fibres or other materials that can interfere with conventional valve designs.

Knife gate valves are primarily used for on/off isolation rather than continuous flow regulation, with the appropriate gate, seat and valve configuration depending on the service conditions.

Types of Knife Gate Valves

  • Unidirectional knife gate valve
  • Bidirectional knife gate valve
  • Slurry knife Gate valve

Features

  • Sharp-edged gate for effective isolation of solids and slurry.
  • Compact flow passage with low resistance when fully open
  • Soft or metal seats for different service conditions.
  • Unidirectional or bidirectional shut-off options.
  • Suitable for slurry, abrasive, fibrous, and viscous media.
  • Used in mining, wastewater, chemical processing, power, and bulk handling.

Specifications:

Knife gate valves are engineered for isolation of slurry, abrasive, fibrous, viscous, and solids-laden media. Selection is based on valve size, pressure class, temperature, material compatibility, seat design, and end connection.

Standards and Testing

Knife gate valves are manufactured and tested to applicable MSS, ASME, API, and ASTM standards based on design and service requirements. MSS SP-81/SP-135 cover knife gate valve designs, while ASME B16.34, B16.5, and B16.47 address valve and flange requirements. API 598 covers inspection and pressure testing, with ASTM/ASME standards governing material specifications.
